Trendy Barcelona is not far away, as well as historical Tarragona, Reus and Girona. Train or bus are both good and very economical options to travel to Barcelona and elsewhere from any city on Costa Dorada. To rent a car is probably the very best way to travel around Costa Dorada and offers the opportunity to visit the more remote villages and areas such as the Catalan cava districts and its vineyards and bodegas.

Along the coast on Costa Dorada you can also go on boat trips to explore underwater and marine life. Glass-bottomed boats goes between many of coastal towns on Costa Dorada: Vilanova, L'Ampolla, L'Hospitalet de l'Infant L'Ametlla de Mar, Cala Calafat, Cambrils, Salou and Tarragona.

The ports in the fishing villages along Costa Dorada are very busy when the boats come in with all the delicacies, which you then can order in restaurants: Fish and Shellfish are of course the local specialties.

Entertainment is granted: The nightlife is great and to the huge amusement park Port Aventura is fun for all the familiy. Port Aventura can be a very expensive adventure, but the attractions and fun is guaranteed. More information is available at www.portaventura.es .

Partying and nightlife is absolutely best in Salou and Sitges where an infinite number of bars and discos are the meeting places in late evenings and night. As usual in Spain the nightlife starts late, and the party atmosphere can be found after midnight.

The climate on Costa Dorada is mild and pleasant throughout most of the year: It will never be as hot as in Andalusia in southern Spain and the winters on Costa Dorada are not very cold. The high season is between July and mid September, but in August it is absolutely crowded everywhere on Costa Dorada.

Beaches on Costa Dorada

The Costa Dorada, located in the south of the autonomous community of Catalonia, takes its name from the golden appearance that the reflected light gives to the sand of its beaches. The coastline here extends for 92 kilometers with more than sixty beaches suitable for family tourism, where it is as easy to find wide-open beaches as coves rich in the wealth of nature, perfect settings to discover the peace and quiet of holidays for all the family, or to do any of the sports offered by the Estación Náutica of Salou-Cambrils-Mont-roig del Camp/Miami Playa, the main reservations centre for leisure and accommodation on the Costa Dorada.

With their wide range of activities and services, year after year the beaches of the Costa Dorada have been recognised with awards for their quality, such as the blue flags (awarded by the European Foundation for Environmental Education), the environmental management standard ISO 14001, the distinction for accessibility, the Ecoplayas (Ecobeaches) award for cleanliness and sustainability or the certification as a Family Tourist Destination, granted by the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Consumer Affairs of the Government of Catalonia, which highlights places that have services designed to make tourism enjoyable when accompanied by children.

Discover all of the possibilities that the Costa Dorada has to offer, bathing in its calm waters or strolling on the fine sand, while enjoying the mild Mediterranean climate!

Nature on Costa Dorada

The Costa Daurada has some unexpected delights awaiting visitors who are interested in nature. The network of protected natural areas includes a surprising variety of landscapes and an extensive biodiversity. The inland mountain ranges of the Montsant Natural Park and the Prades Mountains are characterised by their fi ne examples of Mediterranean mountain vegetation and their large populations of mammals and birds of prey.

The Costa Daurada also has many protected coastal areas of considerable environmental value, where you can observe an abundant diversity of bird life in marsh or dune habitats. The predominant vegetation is Mediterranean brush, with fan or windmill palms, the only palm native to Europe.

The Costa Daurada’s network of nature reserves has the necessary infrastructure to receive visitors. Visitors’ centres in the natural park and other protected areas and tourist offi ces provide the information and assistance needed to enjoy this invaluable heritage. Complementary services provided by expert naturalist guides and companies specialising in organising sports and nature activities add to the facilities that make the Costa Daurada an exceptional destination for the visitor.

You can explore rocky areas with abundant plant life and then, just a few kilometers away, take a dip in the refreshing waters of the Mediterranean. The area offers you a quality package with everything you could dream of for a wonderful holiday - history, art, monuments, nature, sport, traditions, gastronomy, quality accommodation, etc.

All this is rounded off by a variety of activities in which parents and children can enjoy new sensations in natural surroundings. There is an endless choice of leisure activities and possibilities for discovering the charms of the Costa Daurada. Families can enjoy days on the beach, trips into the mountains, entertainment, sports activities, and many more surprises.

The Costa Daurada is a natural landscape that lives up to all the expectations of those looking for new experiences. Much more than a natural area, it is a way of life, with a marvellous climate that you can enjoy from early in the morning until well into the small hours.

The Costa Daurada is ideal for family holidays, with facilities and programmes specially designed to meet the needs of the smallest members of the family. The resort of Salou is an excellent example of this and has been awarded the Catalan Regional Government’s Family Holiday Destination Certificate.

On the Costa Daurada coast you won’t find yourself with time on your hands – in fact, you’ll probably wish you had more! Apart from the tranquillity of the long, wide beaches with their fine, golden sand and crystalline waters, you’ll discover a whole range of activities for families with children to enjoy new sensations in natural surroundings by the seaside. You’ll seen how a clown can fashion all kinds of figures with a balloon, you’ll laugh – or maybe shed a tear or two - watching movies in the open air, you’ll sail the Mediterranean in a splendid ship - immersed like ancient mariners in tales of the sea, you’ll enjoy theatre performances, puppets, conjurors, storytellers... You’ll dive endless times into swimming pools or off floating platforms in the sea. And, after so much action, you can relax at a beach oasis. And as if that weren’t enough, you’ll seen lions, tigers, elephants and dolphins and ride at unimaginable speeds on the back of a dragon!

Costa Dorada History

Follow the footsteps of human evolution and episodes in the history of the Costa Daurada area. You’ll see how the first prehistoric settlers lived in caves like those of Espluga de Francolí and what it was like to be an Iberian in the Citadel of Calafell.

You’ll become an emperor or a gladiator in Tarragona (the city with the second most important Roman remains in the world after Rome) among the impressive monuments declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the year 2000. You’ll also be able to enter the most secret corners of the religious communities that make up the Cistercian Itinerary – the monasteries of Poblet (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992), Santes Creus, and Vallbona de les Monges. Closer to our own time, you’ll be captivated by the twenty-four Modernist or art nouveau buildings on the Modernist Itinerary in Reus, the cradle of art nouveau architecture on the Costa Daurada, where you can also visit different places related to the life of Antoni Gaudí, the universally famous Modernist architect.

The interior of the Costa Daurada is an exceptional place to enjoy nature. It’s a paradise for outdoor sports lovers, surrounded by the green leaves of the hazelnut trees and vines, the grey of the olive groves, and the brown and ochre of the stone used to build the churches and monasteries – all with a backdrop of deep blue sky. In this natural environment you can take part in different outdoor activities and discover the territory’s flora and fauna – guided marsh and wetland tours, mountain bike itineraries (either in the hills or along the coast), hiking trails, and even cave exploring dressed like authentic potholes, complete with helmets! You’ll be bewitched by the beauty of the natural landscape in the Poblet National Natural Interest Area (included in the “Areas of Natural Interest Plan”), the forests of the Prades mountains and the Montsant Natural Park that cover almost 20 km of the Montsant Mountains, including the Muntanya de la Pau (Peace Mountain), which since the 12th century has sheltered at its foot the Carthusian monastery of Scala Dei, the first of the order on the Iberian Peninsula. To all this we can add the towns and villages of inland Costa Daurada – places where time appears to have stood still and where you can take a well-earned rest after so much activity.

Golf Costa Dorada

Practicing golf at the Costa Daurada is a gratifying experience. The warm, sunny weather, good communications and an extensive hotel network mean you can enjoy any of its golf courses, all of which are as diverse as the natural topography of the Costa Daurada landscape, throughout the whole year. And away from the green, the most attractive, alternative possibilities: long golden beaches, nature, monuments, history, gastronomy, modern tourist installations... Costa Dorada: An exceptional environment for an exceptional sport.
